Released by Cardiff, started for Swansea last night
How many of those will we see I wonder.
Would love the next manager after Neil retired to get some Welsh players in there.
I was in dreamland as a kid with the Jason Perry, Robbie James, Ratcliffe, Pike, Dale, Blake etc eras and later with Ledley, Ramsey, Blake, Parry, Earnie etc
Those player are out there, and we are missing them.
according to wikipedia he was a youth player with newport and then swansea. never on cardiffs books although he was born in cardiff
Back in those days arfur when the city were playing in Europe we had to have a minimum of 5 home grown players on the pitch in the cup winners cup. Hence the reason we had all those welsh players at the time. Be interesting in the champions league if those rules were applied to all teams in European competition now as I think some English teams might struggle but at least some young English academy players might get a chance to ply their trade at the highest level
I'm pretty sure he was at Cardiff. Though that has made me question myself.
Either that or Cardiff turned him down.
i'm just going by wikipedia their not always right
Would that mean 5 Welsh homegrown players for us as we're still under the jurisdiction of the FAW?
Probably not, as we can only qualify for Europe through the English system.
But you don't know either, hence the question.
I think it was confirmed we're under the English system after the Portsmouth final
The rule no longer applies as Steve said the English clubs may struggle if it did and as TDA pointed out we would qualify through the English system anyway as we’re not allowed to play in the welsh cups anymore
Also, the homegrown definition has changed a lot recently to 'accommodate' the Top 6 clubs, so it changed to a certain mileage of radius from their school or where they lived I believe.
If this was big enough, it would take in most of Wales anyway, so we'd be fine playing mostly Welsh players.
Back when we were playing Europe regularly, the rule for League clubs was English and Welsh born players only. Scots were counted as foreigners as their clubs had their own route in Europe.
It's changed since then.
But we are hypothesising about a future change which would be more similar to what was originally in place.
Didn’t Fabregas count as homegrown?
On account of him spending x amount of time in the uk as a young player with Arsenal.
That's more where I was coming from, yes.
Definitely changed to do with Residency as in Rugby, plus proximity to Academies which caused consternation regarding compensation for young players from the likes of Man City.
Just not sure what those criteria were.
Fair enough, I thought you were talking about proper Welsh born players, but as City doesn't develop any talent long term, it's a pretty pointless discussion at the moment..
The rules are different now arfur regarding Europe although the FA have introduced I believe a minimum of 8 home grown players in their submitted squads of 25 players for premier league clubs this season
Did I mention that I play squash?
