Have a problem with Central heating not working. We have hot water but no central heating. From the limited knowledge I have and from a similar problem we had last year, it is pointing to diverter valve not working. First thought it may be because of low pressure, but ow I resolved that issue, the Central Heating will not turn on. We have a Vaillant boiler, maybe Ecomax. Can anybody add any advice or recommend a good plumber in Barry area. SJB
We use Steve Rees in Barry (believe it or not, it's not the loveable DJ / one-man-mareathon that we all know & love) Good but fairly expensive. Same as me. Hot water works. Blockage somewhere in radiator or pipes Does the radiators get lukewarm at the top? If so it's gunge. If they get warm at the bottom and cold at top it's air
As TDA says, the pump might have seized. Unscrew the big round screw at the front off the pump, make sure everything is switched off, then get a little electrical screwdriver and put it in the hole where there's a tiny slot, turn the screwdriver carefully and it should free the pump to start spinning again. I've got to do this every bastard year with ours.
Even a new pump can get silted up with all the shite running through the system. I've had a year old pump seize, it usually happens after the heating hasn't been used for a while.
Probably not. Do what TDA said, switch the heating on and feel the pipe entering the pump to see if it's hot, and feel if the one exiting is cold.
I see that @PlumberAde is keeping his head down. Surely a couple of situations that require his attention.
Have you tried replacing the motor of the diverter valve? Easy to get and fit a replacement - and not too expensive. Motorised valves are often the weak point of a CH system.
Good point. Judging by his posts so far I don't think it might have crossed his mind that it was the diverter valve.
