One for the landlord types here I reckon.

I bought my current house just over 2 years ago. In the last month we've started to get lots of post for the prevous owner. They then sent me a text saying that their redirection has ended and asked me to forward any post to their new address.

I ignored the text and she came round tonight with a load of stickers asking us to put them on any post and put back in the post. We refused but reluctantly agreed to stick them in next doors letterbox and they'd forward them.

Post they've been getting (appears to) include correspondances from her employers and tax renewal letters from the DVLA, which given they moved over 2 years ago they really should've updated.

I've since decided that I don't want the responsibility for her mail getting to her and I'll continue to put anything with a return address back in the post marked not at this address.

Does anyone know if I have any legal responsibility over this post? Especially stuff with no returns address on it.

Yours, slighty agitated of Cardiff West.

No liability on you. It's only etiquette that you make any effort. But you're not allowed to open it. 2 years is more than enough time for them to return the courtesy and remove the irritation of your letterbox being used. There's also a legal duty for them to update the type of senders you mention.

As it happens I’d been mistakenly marking the post addressed to the previous owner of my current house ‘Deceased’ and chucking it in the post box for about two years until it was pointed out to me by my neighbour that they were in fact alive and well and living in Fairwater.

As an aside, I used to keep getting post for Jimmy Nail. I stuck that back in the post marked Return to Spender.

    Ex-Postie here.

Best option is keep doing what you're doing. 'Not at this address' and put it in the postbox.

You may have Bailiffs and allsorts at your door otherwise. Their problem if they've not let people know.

There could be a reason why they've not notified companies that they've moved.

I redirected mail for a year after we moved . Forgot to change my car registration document and subsequently forgot to tax my car . Result £80 fine . They know we keep in touch with the neighbors. So a bit miffed at them .

We have this all the time with ex-tenants. "Not known" and into a convenient post box.

Interesting. I was getting loads of letters from Parking Eye for previous owner called Gemma. I wasn't returning them, instead just butprodded them with a stick. the last letter had "Final Demand" written on it so I chucked in the postbox but half expecting the bailiffs to come around. What will the neighbours say? :hehe:

Today I got a DVLA tax renewal letter for a different name. I thought you had to update DVLA for fear of a huge fine. Starting to get pissed off with it all cos I won't know which bailiffs are mine and which are theirs.

There's an easy answer to that.

NEVER answer your door to any Bailiff. They have zero powers.

They have zero powers if they're there for a previous occupier anyway. Nothing in the house belongs to a previous occupier.

Zero powers anyway unless it's a criminal debt (unlikely).

'Pat did you know that if you put the mail back in the post there is nothing the previous occupier can do.'

    'Yes I told you Steve'

    'Oh'
