He is allowed to make that choice. It’s not harming anyone is it and he isn’t being disrespectful either?

Agree. My truck is that it's considered newsworthy every single year. Every single bloody year. Move on press.

Yup. The media industry is poor these days. Lazy and repetitive for sure.

Ironically those guys died to protect free speech and freedom of action.

There's the choice of poppy, white poppy (promoting peace not War) or no poppy.

It's up to everyone to decide what they prefer. I fucking hate the way this has been hijacked to mean something else by the likes of the Daily Fail or The Scum.

Why would anyone give a shit? We survived decades without having footballers wearing handstitched poppies on their shirts.

So spot on, as always, even down to the sponsors on the players' shirt.

I am uneasy about the whole thing. I was not military myself, but my father, uncles and other relations certainly did their bit for the country. My brother in law also in the first Gulf Conflict.

James McLean was actually born and brought up in Northern Ireland which makes him a UK citizen. He has opted to play his football for the Republic, but so far as I am aware is not a citizen of that country. The ROI has declared its own brand of neutrality since the 1930's, but even so many Irish men fought with the allied forces in WW2, recognising that should Germany successfully invade the British Isles, the western boundary of the new German empire was unlikely to stop at Fishguard and Holyhead.

In Matic's case, his fellow countrymen were slaughtered in vast numbers by the Germans in the same conflict. It was the Allied armies who finally brought that to an end.

It was a long time ago, but the poppy is a very powerful symbol to remind those of this country whose families gave up their lives to save others in the major conflicts of the past. It's not just McLean and Matic who have suffered losses. There are millions of Brits and continental Europeans for whom the poppy is a symbol of pride.

My feeling is that if these players ply their trade by choice in our country, they should respect the tradition. If their principles won't allow that, then they should either offer to or be made to sit out the games where the poppy will be worn.

Sorry but I’ve got to disagree here.

Unfortunately the poppy thing has been hijacked for political reasons, which is why a lot of people decide not to wear one.

If a player makes the choice not to wear one then that’s up to them. A game of football has nothing to do with politics or war.

To the vast majority of people, it is not political and it is those wishes that should be respected. There is far too much" tail wagging dog" these days.

But to some people it is.

And their wishes should be respected too.

There’s also far too much dictating going on these days too - people getting outraged at others for daring to have a different view. (Not talking about you here, but the moral guardians of the twitter and facebook universe)

If the wishes of the majority are not respected, then that flies in the face of democracy and is the acceptance of the rule of anarchy. We are in danger of having our lives shaped by the constantly offended and indignant minorities, which is completely arse-backwards.

Hold on, you were saying that McLean should be given some sort of suspension for not wearing the poppy. Would you extend that to all jobs?

If this isn't an example of life being shaped by those easily offended (it's surely a minority of people who give a shit about footballers wearing poppies) then I don't know what is.
