Really pleased to see that a ban on TV advertising during the course of live sport has been agreed. Horse racing exempt, but otherwise all live events are covered. It's an indefinite voluntary arrangement but a victory for common sense at last.

Does that mean no betting adverts on shirts & pitch side screens or just during ad breaks?

It’ll just shift the focus of the ads

We’ll start seeing phrase like “don’t wait until the game”, “get your bets in early” etc, coupled with pre game odds boosts that run out about the same time the ban comes in

TV ads during games at the moment, but hopefully the thin end of the wedge.

The same was said about tobacco advertising, but sport survived.

I am not sure that a reduction on the amount of money that flows into football might not be a good thing anyway. The huge TV deals funded by subscription and advertising have succeeded only in inflating wages and transfer fees at the top end. Those rises are completely disproportionate to anything happening in the real world.

The lady that works in my bookies reckons she may lose her job because of this. She also said they hate the machines though because of all the aggro they bring.

Betting is a culture that has endured for hundreds of years and will continue to. Now is the time to look hard at its greatly increased exposure and ensure adequate safeguards are in place for the future.

It will be interesting to hear what our resident bookie has to say on the subject. Calling @glasgowronnie

A guy from ladbrokes rang into 5 live and thats exactly what he said. Job losses and the loss in profits for the companies is going to be huge. It's their biggest earner I think he said, might be wrong.

I don't know if the benefits to the country outweigh the job losses.

Seems to be just TV ads before, during and after games, taking away sponsorship would be far trickier. Too much money going directly to the clubs and associations of most sports to be closed completely, not in the near future anyway.

Ubiquitous Gambling is something our kids are growing up with. It is even sneaked many digital games, in one similar form or another.
If 'we' dont curb it now, 'we' may suffer the fallout in our old age.
We could very well see more and more people of younger generations getting very desperate for money, and looking for easy pickings.

I think where there is 3 or 4 bookies on the same street it might close 1. Local betting shops should stay open tough. I listened to Radio 4 the other day and an MP on there said he'd seen a report where the bookies were over playing the job loss scenario. They do make eye watering profit after all. Still that doesn't help none if you're getting laid off because of it. That said there is evidence of suicide and wider misery through the amounts lost on these terminals. Tough one to call.
