The BBC4 / other channel documentary thread

There's a good one on eye player off BBC 4 about the Shah of Iran putting on an elaborate party to celebrate 2500 years of the Persian Empire and how it led to him being overthrown by the ayatollah bloke. The dull kent had the party in the middle of the dessert and spent millions and millions on it. He imported 50,000 sparrows from Spain to live in these 15,000 French trees he had flown in and planted around the party but they all died within a day or so. Falling out the sky onto people.The extravagance was next level. 4 tons of food. Well worth a watch. Blocks of ice as big as houses being flown in and that. Nuts. Almost every Royal and Prime minister was there kissing his arse. It started going tits. People were fuming. Good laugh it is. He's lucky they didn't cut his head off. It's a Storyville so it's well made.

Just watched “Anna, The woman that went to fight Isis” on BBC2.

About the girl from Sussex who was killed fighting with the Kurds in Syria. Followed her Dads journey to the country to try to make sense of why she did it. Very moving and well worth a watch.

Watched Disclosure episode about bull calf exports on Iplayer last night. Didn’t realise the extent of the trade and that it’s only Scotland that is prepared to export them. The rest of the uk has banned it.

Just watched Hull’s Headscarf Heroes, it’s about the Hull trawler men’s wives fight for safety at sea, well worth a look, on BBC4

 

For music fans there was a good biog/documentary on BBC2 on Saturday, called Matangi/ Maya/M.I.A - following her life from leaving Sri Lanka to the current day using her own video footage. Really enjoyable doc I thought.

 

I watched a James May episode last night when he goes up in U-2 spy plane. Very interesting.
