Visited London on Tuesday - and after a gap of a couple of years used the Tube to get around. I always marvel at how easy it is to master the system - assuming you've done yer homework, can read and comprehend signs and know east from west. (My old man travelled from Waterloo to Euston and back every year for his hols and always used taxis - because he couldn't read.)

I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are no individual carriages on the Circle/Hammersmith lines - the train is like a long, open-plan bendy-bus with sections that swivel. This meant that we were treated to mobile buskers who travelled the length of the train. One guy proffered his cap and tugged a suitcase with an amp and cd player. Two others played jazz trumpet and sax. When they passed me they were into 'Hit the Road, Jack' - but I did notice they stopped playing when we got into a station. I think the reason was that such performances are illegal and are often associated with petty crime and they didn't want to alert station staff. What they did to 'Hit the Road, Jack' was a crime in itself.

The other innovation (for me) to comment on is that you can now use contactless cards to pay fares (this is probably stale news for most). The system works great. To get onto the system you look for the bank of entrance barriers and plonk your card on the big yellow circle. The gates then open to let you through. (Be careful you only let one card near the machine. It can recognise others in a wallet and charge you over and over) This worked well - except that at Moorgate (where I changed to a mainline service) there was work being done on the escalators and I almost missed the exit yellow circle which was just situated on a table. My return journey across London cost £4.80 - and you can see what you've been charged if you register and log-on to the Transport for London website.

(This was a public service announcement.)

I have not been on the tube for years, I was thinking of taking my daughter for a day trip to have a look around and show her where Henry's shop used to be, do you think I could cope with all that modern contactless stuff? :hehe:

Prolly best to get a contactless card first - although you could try sitting on the yellow circle I suppose.

Just read that in April 2018, there 17 million journeys using contactless payments every week on London public transport.

But there's always one, isn't there!

It is actually better than an oyster card as you don't have to top it up or anything. Just make sure you use the same card every time, and your daughter uses a different (but the same!) card every time and you'll be charged for each journey up until you hit the price of a one day travel card in the zones you're travelling in. Any journeys after that, your card will open the barriers but you won't be charged anything.

Just make sure you swipe out of open stations or you'll be charged the price of an all zones ticket.

Lived in London for work for a few years back in my late teens and I hated the place, couldn't wait to get home on the weekends.

Went back to London with my missus and little 'un last year and did the whole tourist thing, open top buses, Thames boat ride, museums, London Eye, stage show, travelling on the tube and we absolutely loved it, can't wait to go back again.

Turns out I hated London the first time around because I was always skint and couldn't do anything there.

You've prolly all seen the swanky new dark-green GWR rolling stock which has recently replaced the HSTs. They were very comfortable with loadsa leg room and a coupla charging sockets under the seats (least that's what the girl said who groped me). Great acceleration - my stomach was still in Didcot when we reached Reading.

Definitely much better using your contactless card on the underground, no more queuing at those bastard zone card machines, Paddington on a Saturday morning used to be a nightmare for that.

I think we need confirmation of this recent trip.

Have you got a picture of yourself on the top deck of a London bus for example?:sherlock:
