I've seen quite a lot of support on this board for it but can't say I've done much research.

How would Wales survive without money from the EU or England? I just don't see how we would replace it

We will when Independent still receive EU support as do all the other EU countries, much more than broken Westminster gives us.

The decisions on spending would encourage economic growth, increasing the tax base in theory, as a government that was far less austere than the one currently in Westminster would be elected, theoretically. Think about if the coal money was spent on providing sustainable jobs in the region, not plundered by the English only for them to abandon us as soon as the mines closed.

Problem I face is that I just don't think the Welsh assembly are good enough to steer us in the right direction

Because it's mostly Labour, lapdogs of Westminster. A majority party that has Welsh interests at heart might stand a chance of doing right by its country.

You're right. The Unionist puppets currently masquerading as Welsh representatives are the problem, but their ineptness is almost as it it was planned...

There are a lot of bright young Welsh nationalists entering politics and The Senedd so at least the future is bright.

A reasonable complaint, but the best welsh political talent tends to aim for Westminster, which they would no longer be a part of

So is there anything at the moment that we produce which would help us when we're independent eg power

Countries far smaller and less populous than us are succeeding as independent nations, with higher standards of living to boot.

Perhaps we need to look at the likes of Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein etc and see what they're doing that we're told we can't.

I have always wondered how these smaller countries thrive whereas Wales has just seemed to stand still for decades. Sounds to me like most Welsh have been brainwashed by the media to believe we would be nothing without England :shrug2:

And therein lies the problem. We've got a load of them on this board alone.

It's been a plan enacted for some 600 years, so will take a long time to undo.

We could make an immediate start by teaching Welsh children Welsh history.

Maybe if we could stand on our own without handouts there'd be more appetite for independence?

See this is something I dont get.

The general consensus seems to be that people want independence from the uk but are happy to allow EU control over our affairs.

Surely independence means standing in your own two feet and having complete control of your affairs?

It's unlikely that the EU would admit Wales as a stand alone country. Scotland was told that they had no chance which was one of the nails in their independence coffin.

In part it was to try to stop Scotland going independent as it would open the flood gates for independence claims in several European countries. Europe is not as stable and sorted as some would have us believe.

Bear in mind, also, that this was before any solid Brexit talk .....

Scotland was / is part of an EU member state which is a net contributor. As an independent nation, it would become a net receiver. Although there would be an adjustment to the figures for the remaining part of the UK, there is no doubt that Scotland would have been calling for more EU funding than it is "allocated" as part of the UK.

Any new independent country would have to go through a full application process, whereby the 28 EU countries would have to agree to membership. Given that the majority are receivers, it is unlikely that they would agree to a further dilution of EU funds. Similarly, the donating countries wouldn't be keen on another net dependency, given the financial meltdown already seen in some countries. In addition, the UK government would not have supported Scotland's application to join.

The situation would be the same today for Wales, with the additional very real spectre for the EU that one of the major net contributors, i.e. the UK, will be leaving very soon.

Precisely why they're doing everything in their power to make things difficult for the uk to leave.
