I prefer to read a series rather than stand alone novels and then mainly detective fiction.

To start off, I suggest the Logan McRae series of novels by Sturat Macbride, which are set around Aberdeen. Darkly amusing and quite harrowing in places. I would suggest reading them in order, starting with Cold Granite. The author says that isn't really necessary, but there continuing sub-plots, which I think need to be followed in order.

The bible's a good series, although it's sad as the main guy dies in the end.

One of my all-time favourite books is "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson.

He writes in a friendly way that eases you into topics that otherwise might seem a bit complex and you end up enjoying learning quite complicated scientific concepts.

I may have to give Bill Bryson another chance. I didn't particularly enjoy whichever one I started years ago and never tried again.

Bookswise.
Big Stephen King fan and he's written some excellent detective stuff lately, starting with Mr Mercedes and the following 2 books in the Bill Hodges trilogy.

I would highly recommend anything by Kinky Friedman. He's a very interesting chap who's fronted his own Country & Western band Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys*, has run for governor of Texas, runs an animal welfare sanctuary and has written numerous very funny detective novels, which can be read in series though it doesn't really matter if you don't.

(*I appreciate this might not appeal to everyone on here :hehe:)

Colin Dexters Inspector Morse series is quite good.
George Macdonald Fraser (PBUH) the Flashman papers is excellent.
Patrick O'brians Aubrey/Maturin Napoleonic Naval series is another excellent collection.

Have read all of the Lee Child Jack Reacher series and just finishing the short stories. There is an increasing trend by publishers to put out these and also "in between" novellas. I get the feeling that often these are ideas that authors get that don't develop into full books or are discarded sub-plot lines. Nevertheless, a lucrative use of probably abandoned ideas.

I have also noticed on Amazon a 9 or 10 book series called The Hunt for Jack Reacher by Diane Capri. Anybody know anything about these?

The North Water - It's about a killer being on a whaling boat in the north sea. Dark as hell, but really good. The writing does get on your nerves at times though. He tries to over describe everything. Just say what is actually happening, don't try to paint a picture every single paragraph!,

Lincoln in the Bardo - One of a kind.
